Guys--Another dumb question. I purchased a post hole digger with a 9" bit last year. Seems to never be capable of going down 3'. It always seems to dig about 18" then just spin on the compressed/dry clay subsoil. I've made sure the pivots were not binding or out of availible clearance.I realise the B2910 has no down force but the digger frame has significant weight---seems like it should continue untill out of stroke or bottoms on the boom pivot linkage.
Any ideas? I question if a tractor without down force can really/effectively be used for post hole digging.

It has alot to do with how good your point is and the cutters on the flute.
You may have to modify your cutters so they are more aggressive.
I've dug scads of holes where the bit catches a piece of plastic or something else and will just ride with out cutting.
Many times I'll move the tractor forward and back with the auger running to help it break thru the hard spot.

Safety first, but we turn the 3' long control arm around and face it towards the back of the tractor. Someone applies the downpressure witht he control arm and we break through. There are simple downpressure kits available from Worksaver/Farmstar that would probably fit your auger boom. All you need is a rear remote circuit.

A trick that I've had to do is pull the auger out, grab a large spud bar and break through the hard spot and give the auger another try. The control arm turned to the back and having my brother hang off of it didn't help in my circumstance. We were in a long, very dry spell at the time and when the auger stopped biting it would just polish the bottom of the clay hole as it spun. My pilot could use some work too. I'm sure cleaning it up would have helped. ....
